We contact you concerning the case of the Hungarian Boys of Temerin, who remain imprisoned in Serbia since 2004, victims to the excess of the Serbian authorities. Unfortunately this case has remained unnoticed and so did many other similar cases of physical attacks against Hungarians in our country.

As you lead the fact finding mission of the European Parliament in Temerin in 2004 in order to look into the case, we turn to you again, on behalf of the parents of the boys. Things have not changed: my son, István Máriás, one of the five young men, along with Zsolt Illés, István Szakáll, József Uracs and Árpád Horváth are still in prison. They were sentenced to 61 years altogether.

Back in 2004 we filed complaints about the mismanagement of the case, explaining that serious human rights violations occurred. While at the same time around 300 other anti-Hungarian attacks took place and have not been up to today addressed, in our case involving a Serb national, the authorities passed an inconsistent and disproportionate judgement, violating fundamental rights and reflecting ethnic
discrimination.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all you did so far and would like to ask for your further assistance. As you can see, developments in rule of law and democracy in Serbia are not satisfactory. The treatment of the five young men clearly reflects that double standards are used against Hungarians. There is widespread corruption in the judiciary and discrimination is practiced by the nationalist forces in power. This would not happen in a country where democratic values and justice are respected. This makes us believe that justice is only an illusion in Serbia.

In 2010 President Boris Tadic of Serbia promised to grant amnesty to the five young men, but no action followed his promise. At the same time, in a scandalous case of a criminal of Serbian nationality who committed three times as grave crimes as the boys, and was committed to 40 years by the court of justice in Montenegro, was granted amnesty by the President.

As you already offered to help us in the past, you see our suffering has not ended, but we've been living with this heavy burden for 7 years now. Please help us bring our sons home.
